Robot Combat League, Syfy's new reality series pitting 12 expensive, 8-feet-tall humanoid machines against each other in tournament-style face-offs, ends Tuesday night with the final two robots. And while this season lasted only three months, it has been years in the making.

"I really couldn't believe how technologically advacnced they were," Chris Jericho, the show's host and popular WWE wrestler, told Mashable. "It's like being attacked by a Terminator. If you got hit by one of these things it would literally cave your head in."

"We've never seen this before in the history of anything." Read more...

The Incredible Shrinking Apple

Mashable OP-ED

Apple had a good day. The market cheered the company's fiscal second quarter results despite the fact that the company's year-over-year profits declined for the first time since 2003

However, the big picture for Apple isn't as rosy. The company's stock price is down about a third over the past six months, Apple has lost its designation as the world's most valuable company and margins are on a downward trend. Apple's share of the worldwide smartphone market is 20% vs. 70% for Google's Android. Apple still has a commanding lead in tablets, but, if the fate of the iPhone is any guide, then the iPad's lead should also winnow away over time. Read more...

Apple beat Wall Street's estimates for revenue and sales of the iPhone and iPad in the March quarter, but the company's profits declined year-over-year for the first time in a decade.

Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones and 19.5 million iPads, surpassing analysts' estimates by about 1 million on both fronts. Those device sales helped Apple bring in $43.6 billion in revenue for the quarter, beating the consensus estimate of $42.6 billion and setting a new record for March quarter revenues.

"We are pleased to report record March quarter revenue thanks to continued strong performance of iPhone and iPad," said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. "Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline." Read more...

How Much Would It Cost to Be Iron Man 3 in Real Life?

Ironman32
Feed-twFeed-fb

It would cost $10 billion to fund superhero Iron Man's lavish high-tech lifestyle in Iron Man 3 — about $9 billion more than past films.

Fictional billionaire Tony Stark is the CEO of his company Stark Enterprises, but in reality, what doesn't he do? He's a chemist, an inventor, an engineer and an entrepreneur. He may bring in the big bucks, but he's certainly a spender when it comes to being properly equipped to ward off bad guys

In July, MoneySupermarket.com put together an infographic of what it would cost to be Iron Man, but as he embraces more new tech in the upcoming film Iron Man 3, the total cost has jumped from $1.6 billion to $10 billion. Read more...

BlackBerry Q10 Coming to Canada on May 1

Blackberry-q10
Feed-twFeed-fb

BlackBerry has announced that its long-awaited keyboard phone running BlackBerry 10 software, the Q10, will launch on May 1 in Canada.

Canadian carriers Rogers Wireless, Bell Mobility and Telus will all offer the Q10. As is the norm in Canada, customers will need to sign a three-year contract to buy the phone for the subsidized price of $199. Customers will also be able to buy the phone from several retailers, including Future Shop and Walmart Canada.

The first country to get the Q10, however, will be the U.K. BlackBerry hasn't specified an exact date, only that it will be available sometime in April. The U.S. launch is equally unspecific, only that it would come by the end of May. BlackBerry says the Q10 will be priced so U.S. carriers will be able to charge $249 with a two-year contract. Facebook Revamps Brand Pages for Mobile, Desktop Coming Soon

Facebook-iphone
Feed-twFeed-fb

Facebook has been quietly reworking the design of its mobile brand Pages, the first results of which are now on display on Facebook's mobile web and iOS apps. New designs will be coming to Android — and later, to the desktop version of Pages — soon, Facebook said in an e-mailed statement.

The new design positions interaction — rather than content — at the top of the page. Users are prompted to Like, Call, Message and Share the Page, beneath which appears (if an advertiser has paid for it) Pinned Posts, followed by a preview of content from the Timeline:

Perhaps more interesting than the design changes themselves is Facebook's new commitment to "mobile first" design. The social network, like many others, has a long history of beginning redesigns on the desktop, and later adapting them to mobile. Now that nearly half of Facebook's users are accessing the network from their mobile phones every day — and soon, more than half will — Facebook is beginning to prioritize that experience first. Indeed, Facebook recently blocked some employees' access to its website for a week to motivate them to improve Facebook's mobile experience, Facebook producer manager Josh Williams told FastCompany Read more...
