Jammie Thomas-Rasset owes major record labels quite a bit of money for music piracy: $220,000, to be exact. Now, she wants the Supreme Court to overturn those damages on the grounds the amount is "crippling" and the charges "unconstitutional."
Thomas-Rasset was among the thousands who received piracy cease-and-desist letters under the Copyright Act during the Recording Industry Association of America's mid-2000s legal offensive against music piraters. Most of the recipients decided to settle out of court for an average of a few thousand dollars, in order to avoid costly legal fees and potentially much higher legal damages.
