SXSWi: Grumpy Cat Crowned Queen of Social

Grumpy Cat was the undisputed champion this year at South by South West Interactive, earning more than 3,000 Twitter mentions per day for three straight days of the conference

Other celebrities, like SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk, might have peaked with higher social scores on the days of their keynotes, but Grumpy Cat's consistency and downright grumpiness propelled her to glory.

New Pope Francis I Has 40,000 Facebook Subscribers

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was revealed Wednesday to be the new leader of the Catholic Church. He has taken the papal name of Francis I

Bergoglio, 76, is a Jesuit and the first pope from South America. He also has an active Facebook presence with 40,000 subscribers — a number that's sure to rise in the coming hours

Merely three hours before being publicly revealed as pope, he posted this message:

'Veronica Mars' Film Takes Flight on Kickstarter

It's been almost six years since Veronica Mars went off the air, but fans are still crazy about the teenage private investigator played by actress Kristen Bell.

The show's creator, Rob Thomas (pictured above with Bell), is raising funds on Kickstarter to try to finance a Veronica Mars movie. For those with a hazy memory, the CW Television Network show (originally on UPN) was about high schooler Veronica Mars who became an apprentice detective and tried to uncover secrets in her town. The show ran from 2004 to 2007

While never a ratings hit, Veronica Mars had a huge cult following that culminated in several "save our show" fan campaigns to keep the program on the air. It seems particularly fitting that the much-requested (and long-rumored) Veronica Mars movie could come directly from fan backers.

Will 3D Printing Fuel Art and Jewelry Forgery?

While debate rages over using 3D printers to make guns or gun parts, technologies for other possible abuses are emerging — including the ability to cheaply copy and reproduce works of art and jewelry.

A few days ago at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, 3D-printer company MakerBot introduced the other end of the equation — a device called the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner that can create a computer model of any small object.

Makerbot founder and CEO Bre Pettis didn't name a price for the new gadget, which goes on sale this fall. But given the company's focus on home enthusiasts, it will likely be comparatively low-cost. (The latest 3D printer, the MakerBot Replicator 2, sells for $2,199.)

Gap's 'Lo-Fi' Approach to Digital Marketing

AUSTIN — Gap isn't a brand that you'd expect to see at SXSW, but it's making a splash during the music portion of the festival, partnering with Tumblr to bring Austin-goers tunes by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the Shout Out Louds and more. (The brand is also the official t-shirt partner of SXSW.)

Working with musicians is a recent turn for Gap, but it's actually a return to the brand's original roots — in the early days, the company was called "Pants and Discs" and sold denim and vinyl under one roof. But in the past year especially, Gap has upped its cool factor by embracing indie musicians, fashion bloggers and creating 'lo-fi' content on hot new apps, like Vine (not to mention Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest).

Entitled Croissant de Triomphe — a play on Paris' famed monument, the Arc de Triomphe — it follows hero Mickey as he speeds through the City of Light, battling heavy traffic and other obstacles, to deliver croissants to Minnie's cafe. While the film is spoken entirely in French, any viewer can enjoy its simple storyline.

Google Uses SXSW To Share More About Glass

AUSTIN — Google used SXSW this week to share a little more information about Glass. During a session catered specifically to developers, the company revealed more details about Glass’ Mirror API, and showed off several apps that have already been developed for Glass, including products from Gmail, the New York Times, Path and Evernote.

“It feels like tech is often getting in the way more than it needs to," Timothy Jordan, Google’s senior developer advocate, said on stage during the event. “That’s what we’re addressing with Project Glass”

While the company showed off some functioning apps, Jordan was quick to point out that Google isn’t finished with the project, and what we see now might not be what we see a few months from now.

Mars has captured the imagination of both scientists and popular culture buffs going back centuries as books, movies and even games have attempted to encapsulate the isolation and vastness of the red planet seen in our imaginations.

Now it’s caught the eye of indie video game developer Tyler Owen, who hopes to take players to a 25-square-mile stretch of the red planet in his in-development game Lacuna Passage. Owen is a longtime space science enthusiast who was inspired to set his latest game on Mars after following the descent of the Mars Curiosity rover to the planet’s surface during the summer of 2012.

Viral Hoop Star Aquille Carr Hints He'll Skip College, Go Pro Abroad

For a teenager who achieved worldwide fame through viral YouTube highlight mixes, Twitter was an appropriate way for Aquille Carr to seemingly announce one of the most important decisions of his young life

Carr is a 5-foot-6 high school basketball phenom from inner-city Baltimore, Md. He's a senior committed to play college ball next season for Seton Hall University. But in a series of tweets posted to his 20,000 followers late Monday night, Carr seemed to say he'll skip college to turn pro abroad before trying to make it in the NBA:

Carr then retweeted scores of messages from fans wishing him luck overseas and said in a Tuesday morning post: "I promise ill come back in go to school when its all said in done."
